Orthodontic Emergency Care

While orthodontic treatment is generally safe, occasionally patients may experience a dental injury or appliance issue. Knowing how to handle these situations can minimize discomfort and prevent delays in treatment.

Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances

Appliances can sometimes break, bend, or cause irritation. Common issues include loose bands, brackets, or poking wires. If any of these occur, call our office during regular patient hours to schedule an appointment. Walk-in emergency care is not available to ensure the comfort of scheduled patients.

In the meantime, you can try these helpful tips:

  • Irritating tie wires: Cover with orthodontic wax or gently tuck under the archwire using a blunt object, such as a pencil eraser or Q-tip

  • Loose bands or brackets: Usually safe to leave in place until your appointment

  • Poking or broken archwires: Bend gently with a pencil eraser or trim carefully with nail clippers; call our office if discomfort continues

Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth

If you experience a direct injury, such as a knocked-out, fractured, or displaced tooth:

  • Apply ice immediately to the injured area

  • Contact your general dentist as soon as possible for assessment and imaging

  • Once your dentist evaluates the injury, we can adjust or replace orthodontic appliances as needed

This approach ensures both your dental health and orthodontic treatment remain on track.

After-Hours Emergencies

If an orthodontic emergency occurs outside of office hours, contact our office for guidance. We will provide instructions on who to reach and steps to minimize discomfort until you can be seen.
